PRESS RELEASE – 11 December 2017

EIGHT MORE AW139S TO STRENGTHEN RESCUE AND BORDER PATROL SERVICES IN ITALY.

  • Contract for two AW139s for the Coast Guard and six for the Customs and Border Protection Service valued at approximately 112 million euro for delivery by 2020
  • 53 AW139s ordered by the Italian Government operators for public services to date
  • Over 250 customers from around 70 nations have already ordered more than 1,000 AW139s, nearly 900 of which are in service
Leonardo announced today further orders for its AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopter for public service and security operations in Italy, with contracts for eight aircraft valued at approximately 112 million euro.
The Italian Coast Guard has signed a contract for two AW139s to perform search and rescue missions, with deliveries to be completed by the end of 2018, while the Italian Customs and Border Protection Service (Guardia di Finanza) has ordered six to perform patrol operations, with deliveries to be completed by 2020.
With these aircraft deliveries both operators will have a fleet of 14 AW139s each, allowing a further enhancement in mission capability and simplified logistics as they replace ageing AB412 aircraft. The Italian Coast Guard recently passed the 10,000 flight hours milestone with its AW139 fleet, having saved many lives in operation and providing evidence of the outstanding effectiveness, reliability of the aircraft and successful partnership with Leonardo. Italian Customs and Border Protection Service has been using its AW139s for a range of roles across the nation including mountain and maritime patrol and reconnaissance, law enforcement, SAR and homeland security.

One of the very first Agusta-Bell AB412SP produced in Italy … this helicopter, construction number 25602, was originally delivered to EliSud as I-LEMA during August 1989 … after very few years of duty in Southern Italy was returned to Agusta Factory and subsequently leased to Sweden Army as 11338 for approximately two years (1993-1994). After the lease in Sweden “25602” returned in Italy and was finally registered as I-MAGM. Always wearing the original EliSud color scheme was than bought by Elilario Italia and operated for several years on behalf of 118 Regione Lombardia – Elisoccorso Como. This helicopter was, for a long time, a very well known machine flying in our skies. With the arrival of the new AW139s within Elilario Italia (Inaer Italia) fleet, I-MAGM was used as a backup machine for a while, and, afterward, sold to Inaer Spain in the second half of 2008 as EC-KUV.

Thanks to several contributors for the images inserted today into I-BEPP AgustaWestland AW139 data sheet … the helicopter is currently operated from Babcock Mission Critical Services Italia on behalf of AREU Regione Lombardia – Elisoccorso Milano.

Leonardo: AW139s to support Queensland Government’s helicopter fleet modernization programme.

  • Order signed for two AW139s that will enter service by December 2018
  • The aircraft will add to three AW139s already in service performing EMS/SAR missions
  • Over 1000 AW139s have been ordered by more than 250 customers in nearly 70 countries to date

Rome, 24 October 2017 – Leonardo announced today that the Government of Queensland in Australia has placed an order for two additional AgustaWestland AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopters. The aircrafts are expected to enter into service by December 2018 performing emergency medical services and search and rescue missions over land and sea. The AW139s will replace two older helicopter models as part of a fleet modernization programme and reduce maintenance costs.
With world leading capability, performance, ride quality and cabin space, the AW139 has been chosen for its ability to meet the Queensland Government’s operational requirements. These helicopters will add to three AW139s already in service with the Queensland Government, further strengthening the State’s air rescue capabilities and leveraging efficiencies in support, maintenance and training. The new aircraft will be operated by Queensland Government Air (QGAir), a division of the Queensland Government’s Public Safety Business Agency and will be based in Townsville. The aircraft will also serve across all of North Queensland and will be subject to fleet rotation between North and South when needed, in order to ensure the optimum coverage for the State’s community.
This latest order further reinforces the presence of Leonardo in the Australian market with more than 120 helicopters of various models ordered to date for both commercial, public utility and military roles. In the last few years the AW139 has proven to be the most successful EMS helicopter in Australia with 30 already in service with various customers.
