Helionix fleet hits 100,000 flight-hour milestone.
Airbus Helicopters’ digital avionics suite now operational on H135, H145 and H175, coming up on H160.
Las Vegas, 1 March 2018 – Airbus’ fleet of helicopters equipped with the Helionix avionics system have surpassed the symbolic milestone of 100.000 flight hours, just three years after customer operations started.
Initially in service with the H145 and H175, this digital avionics suite was later certified in the H135 and in the future will equip the H160 as well as other helicopters in the current and future Airbus Helicopters product line. Designed by Airbus Helicopters to offer increased mission flexibility and operational safety, Helionix grew out of operators’ need for a more powerful avionics system with greater functions and computing capacity, but which was easier to use and relied on fewer displays. It comprises two computers and a one-of-a-kind cockpit layout with up to four electronic displays designed to improve pilots’ situational awareness in flight. “Helionix is a family concept that has been hailed by users for its intuitive human machine interface and autopilot, features which allow pilots to concentrate more fully on the flight itself and increase flight safety” declared Jean-Jacques Mevel, Head of Helionix Program. “
We keep investing on Helionix with regular software enhancement, which lately included bolstering the SAR capabilities as well as the Rig N’ Fly automatic oil platform mode approaches”. The avionics suite includes a four-axis autopilot to reduce pilot workload, and a First Limit Indicator in which engine instrument data is shown under one indicator. A GPS navigation and communication system and a Traffic Advisory System complete the suite, while a mission system, including Digital map, a Helicopter Terrain Avoidance System and a Synthetic Vision System, give pilots full situational awareness. Next step will involve enhancing functions like the Automated Dependent Surveillance-broadcast, the Synthetic Vision System and the Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System advanced modes as well as proposing connectivity advanced solutions. At present, more than 250 helicopters are today operated with Helionix, involving over 40 operators worldwide and carrying out a wide range of missions including EMS, law enforcement, Police, Oil&Gas, SAR, VIP etc.

Safran marks 20th anniversary of Airbus Helicopters’ H135.
11 October 2016, Helitech International, Amstedam
Safran congratulates Airbus Helicopters on the 20th anniversary of the entry-into-service of its H135 light twin. The first EC135, powered by Safran engines, was delivered in 1996.
Bruno Even, Safran Helicopter Engines CEO, said: “I wish Airbus Helicopters a happy anniversary for its H135 family. It is a great aircraft that over the years has demonstrated excellent performance coupled with low operating costs. We are proud to be onboard its latest variant with our Arrius 2B2Plus”.
Powered by two Arrius 2B, the EC135 made its maiden flight on 15 February 1994. Certified on 28 May 1996, the 2B was the first engine to enter service on the rotorcraft. For 20 years, Safran has matched the evolution of this aircraft, bringing to its customers more safety, reliability and performance. In 2014 the Arrius 2B2Plus entered service on the latest evolution of the rotorcraft family.
Arrius 2B2Plus delivers increased power at take-off and during hot and high missions compared to the earlier 2B2 version, together with lower direct operating costs. The engine has also one of the highest TBO in its class (4000 hours) and is also certified on the H135 with and without an inlet barrier filter.
Over the years, the Arrius 2B2Plus has continuously increased its popularity among operators, especially those dealing with demanding missions like emergency medical services, search and rescue, or military training. In 2015, Norwegian Air Ambulance changed to this engine for its new H135 fleet. DRF Luftrettung also selected the 2B2Plus to power its three new H135. Last July, Safran also won the confidence of the UK MoD, by being selected to power a new H135 military training fleet under the MFTS program.
Today, more than 500 H135 are powered by Safran. Each day, Arrius 2B1, 2B2 and 2B2Plus contributes to critical missions that save life and bring assistance to people.
With eight million recorded flight hours, the Arrius remains the most popular engine in its class. To date, Safran has delivered more than 3,000 Arrius engines to 430 customers in 60 countries.

Airbus Helicopters celebrates 20th anniversary of the H135 family at Helitech.
- The reference multi-mission, twin-engine helicopter continues to set standards 20 years on with the addition of Airbus Helicopters’ Helionix.
- The H135 remains a cornerstone of the company’s global strategy through recent orders from China and the UK.
Amsterdam, 11 October 2016 – Airbus Helicopters is celebrating two decades of operations with the H135 light twin, multi-mission helicopter at the Helitech show. Twenty years after its entry into service and thanks to continuous evolution, the H135 has significantly extended its performance and mission capabilities. Today, more than 300 customers in 75 countries operate the H135 for a wide range of missions including Emergency Medical Services (EMS), law enforcement, corporate transport, offshore wind and military flight training.
During a press event at Helitech, Steffen Lutz, CEO of German rescue organization DRF Luftrettung said: “As launch customer of the H135 in 1996, we can now look back on twenty years of rescue operations with this helicopter. The H135 has proven a safe and reliable workhorse and enabled us to save thousands of lives. We have had first-hand experience of the benefits brought by the performance and mission improvements introduced by Airbus Helicopters over the past two decades, and they have proved critical when we put them to use daily in our most demanding HEMS missions. As a long-term operator of the H135 family, we are particularly looking forward to receiving the new Helionix-equipped version in 2017.”
The integration of Airbus Helicopter’s Helionix avionics suite underlines the constant development of the H135. The cockpit system with 4-axis-autopilot – which already equips the H175 and H145 family – will further reduce pilots’ workload and provides an unrivalled level of safety. The H135 with Helionix will receive certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in the coming weeks. Ascent Flight Training will be the first recipient of a fleet of 29 Helionix-equipped H135s, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, as part of the UK’s Military Flying Training System (UK MFTS).
The H135 will continue to set standards worldwide in the frame of the company’s global strategy. Following the partnership agreement with a consortium of Chinese companies who purchased 100 H135 in June 2016, the light-twin helicopter is now set to burst into the Chinese market with its outstanding EMS Multi-Mission capabilities.
“Over two decades and four million flight hours, the H135 has established itself as the utility helicopter of choice worldwide thanks to its proven track record in safety, availability and flexible configuration,” said Guillaume Faury, Airbus Helicopters CEO. “Today, the evolved and upgraded H135 plays a key role supporting our customers’ success fulfilling the mission requirements for public service, military, corporate and offshore roles,” he added.
