The AW169 light intermediate twin engine helicopter’s operational capabilities and configuration options grow further with the recent EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) certification of the skid undercarriage and unique IFR, single pilot, Advanced Search and Rescue (SAR) Modes.

These latest achievements follow additional enhancements, such as the introduction of the Phase 8 core avionics software release combined with HTAWS (Helicopter terrain Awareness Warning System) Offshore Modes. 

The introduction of skids adds to the existing retractable and fixed landing gear options, providing the market with all three undercarriage solutions. This makes the AW169 the only modern CS29-certified aircraft able to offer all options, further demonstrating the versatility by design of the type. This certification will enable the start of aircraft deliveries with the skid configuration, the initial handover is planned for Italy’s law enforcement operators.

The Advanced Search and Rescue (SAR) Modes introduce dedicated FMS (Flight Management System) search patterns enabling the aircraft to automatically fly along a predefined search path, which reduces pilot’s workload on the search phase of a SAR mission. The AW169 is the only helicopter in its weight category that features Advanced SAR Modes. The high level of automation, which is delivered allows for single pilot capable SAR modes certification, making the AW169 the world’s first civil-certified helicopter with this capability. Further ongoing developments to expand the range of options and kits, also include a 700-880kg capable modular fuel tank installation or a 3-seat installation in the third seat row increasing thenumber of passengers in the cabin to 11 providing operators with an even greater degree of freedom to maximise mission versatility in terms of payload and range. These latest enhancements add to the performance increase packages, which were certified in late 2021 and deliver greater performance in all conditions for all applications making the AW169 the helicopter with the best power-to-weight ratio in its class.  

Designed with the principle of maximum flexibility, the type stays true to this value today and in the future to meet the most stringent requirements. The AW169 continues to provide all new capabilities to operators looking for an ideal combination of light helicopter cost with higher category performance, payload, and cabin space, all combined with comprehensive and ever-growing support and training services. 

The introduction of the AW169 has further strengthened the competitiveness and market position of Leonardo in the world helicopter market. It has expanded Leonardo’s presence in the emergency medical service market and added more operators for law enforcement, disaster relief, and fire-fighting duties. It further reinforces the company’s leadership in the multi-engine VIP market providing operators with one more option fitting between the popular AW109 series and the bestselling AW139 models. It adds one more solution for shorter range operations supporting the energy sector and allows Leonardo to play a growing role in the new wind farm support field. Moreover, its dual-use design has responded to a range of government, homeland security and defence requirements in Italy and abroad for missions like surveillance, troop transport, combat operations, disaster relief and emergency response, fire-fighting, training, mountain rescue and medevac. 

Over 300 AW169s are on order today, with around 150 units delivered from the Vergiate final assembly line (Italy) to operators in 25 countries. The global fleet has logged in excess of 125,000 flight hours in all kind of operations and conditions. The fleet leader has exceeded 3000 flight hours in EMS operations in Sweden.

  • The AW119Kxs will perform a wide range of missions supporting homeland security, communities and environmental activities. The AW119Kx will complement the Carabinieri’s helicopter fleet and deliver operational synergies with their new AW139s and AW169s. 
  • To date more than 490 AW119s have been ordered by operators worldwide, with growing success in defence, security, and rescue duties 

Leonardo has announced today the signing of a contract by Italy’s Carabinieri for the supply of 20 AW119Kx single engine helicopters for its Air Service.

The aircraft will be assembled at Leonardo’s Vergiate facility (Varese) with deliveries expected in the 2023-2026 period. The contract also includes a comprehensive turnkey logistics support package and training services for pilots and maintenance technicians.   

The delivery of the helicopters will allow the Carabinieri to meet its fleet modernisation requirements in order to further strengthen and enhance the security of national communities. This will be made possible carrying out a range of patrol and reconnaissance tasks over land, identifying critical targets, gathering investigation evidence, as well as supporting ground units’ activities. Other duties also comprise environment monitoring and protection, and, if asked by National Disaster Relief Authority, fire-fighting in addition to rescue missions. 

The AW119Kxs feature digital technology, which increases operational effectiveness and lowers operating costs. The helicopters will be used at the existing locations of the service, which includes 18 bases across the country. Their equipment will allow full interoperability with other Carabinieri’s assets and full cooperation with those of other armed forces and government agencies, both in-country and internationally. 

Gian Piero Cutillo, MD Leonardo Helicopters, said: “The introduction of the AW119Kx in the Carabinieri Air Service’s fleet ideally integrates the capabilities the operator already has chosen thanks to the AW139s and AW169s. The helicopters respond to the wide spectrum of the Air Service’s requirements considering their national duties and an evolving and increasingly complex operational scenario. We’re proud to continue to support the Carabinieri with capabilities that are able to face new security challenges and benefit the national communities”.   

The specific characteristics of the AW119Kx and its certification and military standards allow the operator to perform missions over urban areas effectively and safely thanks to the type’s features such as system redundancies, power margin, excellent external visibility, advanced digital navigation and mission avionics. The latter is based on a Garmin G1000H cockpit featuring wide colour screens, synthetic vision, HTAWS, satellite navigation/moving map. The AW119Kx has a spacious cabin and baggage compartment, and high main rotor clearance for greater safety of personnel. Carabinieri’s AW119Kxs will feature, among others, HD EO, cargo hook, mission console with data-link, hyperspectral system for environment monitoring, radio, wire cutter, search light and a Bambi Bucket. Provisions for a floating system and life raft and a snow kit are also included.

The highly versatile AW119Kx features both VFR and IFR avionics based on customer choice. This allows greater situational awareness, mission effectiveness and safety. The AW119Kx has unmatched performance with high power margin and the most spacious cabin in its category, able to host up to six passengers depending on configuration. More than 490 AW119s have been sold to date.

La SATER 1-22, tenutasi al Mugello, è un’attività interforze, interministeriale ed interagenzia, organizzata dall’Aeronautica Militare e dal Corpo Nazionale di Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico.

​Eventi addestrativi di Soccorso Aereo come la SATER 1-22, conclusasi lo scorso 15 marzo a Borgo San Lorenzo (FI), hanno uno scopo fondamentale: sviluppare sinergie e migliorare costantemente tecniche e procedure comuni a favore della salvaguardia della vita umana.

Con questa premessa, personale ed assetti di tutte le Forze Armate (Esercito Italiano, Marina Militare, Aeronautica Militare, Carabinieri) unitamente a Guardia di Finanza, Polizia di Stato e Vigili del Fuoco, hanno partecipato in Toscana ad un evento dal chiaro carattere interforze, interministeriale ed interagenzia.

Nel Mugello, in provincia di Firenze, il personale coinvolto (circa 150 tra equipaggi, tecnici, operatori, personale di supporto logistico) si è misurato con uno scenario, anche notturno, di ricerca e soccorso di un aereo da turismo di cui si erano perse le tracce, e con ulteriori due distinti scenari, per il recupero di un totale di tre escursionisti infortunati sulle impervie aree montane circostanti.

In un’intera giornata di intensa attività, alla quale hanno preso parte anche squadre mediche e cinofile, tutti i partecipanti hanno dimostrato grande coinvolgimento, che è alla base della profonda convinzione di quanto sia importante la conoscenza reciproca per prepararsi ad affrontare i più disparati casi reali. La SATER (sigla di Soccorso Aereo Terrestre), creata per soddisfare questa esigenza, è un’attività addestrativa organizzata più volte all’anno su tutto il territorio nazionale tramite il Comando Operazioni Aerospaziali (COA) dell’Aeronautica Militare di Poggio Renatico (FE) insieme al Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS), con la pianificazione del Rescue Coordination Centre – RCC del COA.

Notevole lo sforzo logistico espresso nel Posto Base Avanzato predisposto dai militari dell’A.M. sull’aviosuperficie “Collina” di Borgo San Lorenzo (FI), dove le squadre di ricerca e soccorso (provenienti da CNSAS e Guardia di Finanza) hanno utilizzato ben 8 aeromobili: un elicottero HH-139 dell’85° Centro SAR del 15° Stormo di Pratica di Mare – Roma, dell’Aeronautica Militare ed altri sei elicotteri appartenenti: all’Esercito Italiano (un UH-205 del 4° Reggimento “Altair” di Bolzano dell’Aviazione Esercito), alla Marina Militare (un SH-90A del Quinto Gruppo della Stazione Elicotteri Luni Sarzana – Spezia), ai Carabinieri (un AW-139 del Nucleo Elicotteri CC di Pisa), alla Guardia di Finanza (un AB-412 della Sezione Aerea G.d.F. di Pisa e un UH-169 del 1° Gruppo Aereo della G.d.F. di Pratica di Mare), alla Polizia di Stato (un UH-139 dell’8° Reparto Volo della Polizia di Stato di Firenze) e ai Vigili del Fuoco (un AW-139 del Nucleo Elicotteri VV.F. di Bologna), mentre un velivolo U-208 della Squadriglia Collegamenti di Linate (AM) e) ha fornito supporto nell’area di ricerca designata, ma non ha imbarcato le squadre.

All’attività diurna, strutturata su un costante imbarco e sbarco di squadre terrestri impegnate in ricerca e recupero degli infortunati in aree particolarmente impervie è seguita anche una frazione notturna, molto qualificante in ottica di condivisione di tecniche, mezzi e procedure comuni.

Gli assetti aerei della SATER 1-22 sono stati coordinati dal RCC, mentre il CNSAS della Toscana ha predisposto e coordinato le squadre di ricerca a terra, formate da volontari estremamente specializzati e con una grande conoscenza del territorio. “Ogni componente, proveniente dalle diverse Amministrazioni dello Stato ha contribuito con le proprie competenze e specificità alla buona riuscita della SATER – ha dichiarato il Colonnello Alfonso Cipriano, Direttore dell’Esercitazione – sfruttando al meglio l’opportunità addestrativa da essa fornita: conoscersi per operare insieme ci rende pronti ad intervenire in emergenze reali”.

AERONAUTICA: AL VIA IN UMBRIA ESERCITAZIONE INTERNAZIONALE DI SOCCORSO AEREO “GRIFONE 2019”

Sull’aeroporto di Foligno, dal 9 al 13 settembre, opereranno 13 velivoli e 27 squadre di ricerca e soccorso a terra

Si svolgerà dal 09 al 13 settembre 2019, nella provincia di Perugia (Umbria), la dodicesima edizione dell’esercitazione “Grifone”, la principale attività addestrativa dell’Aeronautica Militare nel campo della ricerca e soccorso aereo, in collaborazione con il Corpo Nazionale del Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS). All’edizione di quest’anno parteciperanno 13 velivoli e 27 squadre di ricerca e soccorso a terra appartenenti a Reparti di volo delle Forze Armate italiane, Corpi Armati dello Stato ed altri Enti ed Amministrazioni italiane e straniere che hanno aderito all’accordo internazionale SAR. Med. Occ. (Search And Rescue Mediterraneo Occidentale).

La “Grifone” è un’esercitazione internazionale, interforze ed interagenzia organizzata annualmente dall’Aeronautica Militare con l’obiettivo di proiettare la capacità di comando, controllo e coordinamento degli assetti impiegati, in prossimità del luogo in cui si è verificato un incidente aeronautico. In questo modo sarà possibile  mantenere sempre elevati gli standard nell’ambito delle attività di ricerca e soccorso sia diurne che notturne in ambiente montano ed impervio e verrà incrementata la conoscenza delle procedure comuni, sia in campo nazionale che internazionale, al fine di ottenere un impiego ottimale di tutte le forze disponibili.

Inoltre, quest’anno per il secondo anno, all’interno della “Grifone” prenderà parte l’esercitazione “Eleos”, incentrata sulla gestione post incidente aeronautico che vedrà interessato personale civile e militare dell’Aeronautica Militare, dell’Università degli Studi di Urbino, la Polizia di Stato e l’Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale delle Marche (ARPAM).  In questo ambito l’addestramento si concentrerà sulla ricerca e recupero di materiali appositamente predisposti, sulla prevenzione infortuni, sulla protezione ambientale, sulle attività della polizia giudiziaria e sulla gestione dello stress.

All’edizione di quest’anno che si svolgerà presso l’aeroporto civile di Foligno in collaborazione con l’Aeroclub Foligno, parteciperanno assetti e personale dell’Aeronautica Militare, dell’Esercito Italiano, dei Carabinieri, della Guardia di Finanza, della Polizia di Stato, dei Vigili del Fuoco, del Corpo Ausiliario Infermiere Volontarie della Croce Rossa Italiana, del CNSAS, della Protezione Civile e Servizio Sanitario di Urgenza ed Emergenza 118 della provincia di Perugia.

E’ inoltre prevista la presenza di un elicottero AS-555 Fennec dell’Armée de l’Air (Francia), di un AS332 spagnolo e di un AS332 della Luftwaffe svizzera, nonché la partecipazione di osservatori stranieri tra cui Austria, Bosnia, Portogallo, Emirati Arabi Uniti, Serbia.
